Crombie Running for Mississauga Mayor

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brian Crombie Launches Candidacy for Mayor of Mississauga, Promising Bold Leadership and Visionary Solutions from an Outsider Perspective

Mississauga, Ontario, Wednesday, April 24, 2024 – Today, respected community leader and longtime Mississauga resident Brian Crombie officially announced his candidacy for Mayor of Mississauga in the upcoming by-election on June 10th. With a deep-rooted commitment to public service and a clear vision for the city’s future, Brian Crombie aims to usher in a new era of bold leadership and visionary solutions to address the pressing challenges facing Mississauga.

“I am honoured to announce my candidacy for Mayor of Mississauga,” said Brian Crombie. “As a longtime resident, businessperson, and community advocate, I am deeply concerned about the future of our city. We face numerous crises—affordability, congestion, crime, and a lack of vision. Unlike the four leading candidates currently on council, I believe that to bring about meaningful change to City Hall and instill a new vision in our city, we need fresh perspectives and serious leadership. I firmly believe that by working together, we can overcome these challenges and forge a brighter, more prosperous future for Mississauga for generations to come. I am the candidate of reform and change, not beholden to the policies of the past Council. You can’t expect change with the same cast of characters.”

Addressing Mississauga’s Pressing Challenges

Brian Crombie’s decision to enter the mayoral race comes at a pivotal moment for Mississauga, as the city grapples with a host of urgent issues requiring immediate attention. Mississauga needs decisive new leadership to navigate these challenges and chart a course towards a brighter future. Some of the policies Brian would like to promote include:

  • All-day, two-way, frequent service on the Milton Mississauga Go line has been discussed for two decades. Metrolinx says it has an 8:1 benefit to cost. This would be a surface subway for Mississauga, and Brian will work incessantly with other governments to make it Priority One.
  • New transit lines to sizable new developments on the lake in south Mississauga are critical or the congestion will be unbearable. Brian knows how they can get done.
  • The only way to improve housing affordability is with dramatic increases in supply and that will only come with decreased review times and decreased taxes. Brian will ensure that Mississauga halves the approval review time, with as-of-right zoning around major transit stations, on major arterials, and for the missing middle. In addition, some of that density must come with affordable and accessible units.
  • Crime is at crisis levels. We need more policing, real deterrents, and the closing of the ports to used car exports. Many residents have expressed concerns about safety; they no longer feel secure. Incidents such as guns in Port Credit, carjackings, home invasions, and burglaries are indicative of the challenges facing our city.
  • Mississauga has underinvested in the amenities that make our city livable and enjoyable. We need a vibrant downtown, a waterfront retail entertainment complex, a park like Central Park, access to a renewed Britannia Farm, active prosperous Main Streets, and investment in Arts, Culture, Festivals, and places that build community.
  • Mental health and isolation have been real issues since the pandemic. We should never close parks again; we need to focus on wellness, not just sick care.
  • There are two ways to keep taxes down; we need a hard look at expenditures and efficiency that only a business-oriented person can really bring to government, and we need to attract and support the commercial tax base. Mississauga has lost its growth and prosperity agenda. We need to bring great high-paying jobs to Mississauga.
  • Brian believes strongly in democracy, but with low turnouts, the power of incumbency and the unequal ward system, with debates only including candidates currently on Council, do we really have it? We should have term limits, equal wards, a referendum on big issues like separation from Peel, and recall rights to keep politicians accountable.
